Climate change poses severe challenges to global agricultural cultivation and production systems, necessitating proactive development of technology-driven agriculture to adapt. The College of Bioresources and Agriculture at National Taiwan University and Wageningen University & Research (WUR) from the Netherlands jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a cross-national Joint Research Center, aiming to develop cutting-edge agricultural technologies that lead internationally. This collaboration, announced on April 8, 2024, in the presence of Rick Nobel, Agricultural Counselor at the Netherlands Trade and Investment Office in Taiwan, sets a new benchmark for the development of smart agricultural technology and further strengthens global high-end agricultural technology and industry cooperation.
This collaboration will integrate the strengths and research resources of both institutions, focusing on optimizing crop growth models for precise agricultural management, utilizing artificial intelligence technology to enhance greenhouse crop production efficiency, applying data science to establish digital phenotype analysis techniques to screen for climate-resistant crop varieties, and developing advanced circular agricultural models to reduce waste generation and carbon emissions, among other cutting-edge technologies leading globally.
Wageningen University, as a leader in agricultural research and innovation, is renowned globally and ranks first in the world for agriculture and forestry in the QS World University Rankings, second only to Harvard University in environmental science globally. The university's research teams collaborate with agricultural enterprises and governments to actively promote various innovative projects and technology applications, including agricultural technology, data analysis, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, making remarkable contributions and achievements to global agriculture.
Dr. Yu-Pin LIN, Dean of the College of Bioresources and Agriculture at National Taiwan University, stated that the visit of the WUR research team to sign the agreement to establish the Joint Research Center following the exchange student agreement signed last November holds significant meaning. Besides cultivating outstanding cross-national talents, both parties have reached consensus on diverse cooperation in smart agricultural technology. By combining WUR's leading greenhouse technology and industry competitiveness in the temperate region of the Netherlands with the rich scientific and practical experience and technology of the College of Bioresources and Agriculture at National Taiwan University in Taiwan's subtropical region, they aim to create an international, innovative agricultural research platform. This platform will not only address significant challenges faced by global agriculture in temperate and subtropical regions but also establish Taiwan as a hub for agricultural technology innovation.
